Dr. Onome Dema, a traditional High Chief in Urhobo land said it was painful and shameful that children born by Urhobo parents could not communicate in their mother tongue, hence the decision by UPUA to organize the annual quiz competition towards encouraging the teaching and learning of Urhobo language.
The UPUA President General commended the contestants and their teachers for their zeal and interest in the study of Urhobo language, and urged them to sustain the tempo.
She charged parents to speak Urhobo language to their children and wards at home at all times, so as to promote and preserve the Urhobo language and culture.
More than 50 govt secondary schools across the 24 kingdoms of Urhobo land registered for the Urhobo language quiz contest out of which 12 schools qualified for the finals held at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, FUPRE, Effurun, on Thursday 22nd October, 2020.
The 12 finalists were Okene Mixed Secondary School, Girls Model Sec School Evwreni, Erho Secondary School, Oharisi Secondary School, Ughelli, Ujovwre Secondary School, Urhobo Model College, Effurun, Ofuoma Secondary School, Oteri Secondary School, Ebrumede Secondary School, Okpara Girls Model Secondary School, Okwagbe Secondary School, and Oginibo Secondary School.
The quiz competition featured questions that tested the ability of the contestants to translate English into Urhobo and vice versa, as well as a debate to test their ability to read and speak Urhobo language fluently.
At the end of the Urhobo language quiz contest, Ebrumede Secondary School which scored 17 points came first with a cash prize of ₦100,000, Urhobo Model College Effurun smiled home with a cash award of N70,000 after scoring 15 points to clinch the 2nd position, while Ujovwre Secondary School came 3rd with14 points and a cash prize of N50,000.
The 2020 edition of the Urhobo language quiz competition attracted some prominent Urhobo indigenes including the Assistant Secretary General, UPU Worldwide, Dr. Chief Dickson Oyovwi; the President of UPU Ighele, Comrade Ovie Ebireri; the Editor of Urhobo Voice Newspapers, Mr. Kenneth Young; a renowned broadcast journalistand media scholar, Dr. Godwin Orhadahwe, as well as a Christian Cleric, Apostle Abraham, all of whom are Illustrious sons of Urhobo land, always ready to serve.
