Following a bill recently sponsored by the Member Representing Okpe, Sapele and Uvwie Federal Constituency, Hon Efe Afe that Ogorode Power Generation plant should be step down to enable the people of Sapele and its environs benefits from the power generation from the Plant, the Chairman and members of the House Committee on power visited the Ogorode Plant as part of their oversite functions.
Hon Aliyu while speaking with Newsmen soon after inspecting the plant with members of his Committee said that the visit was to get first hand information of the challenges facing the power plant.
Hon Aliyu who noted that the Ogorode plant is one of the NIPP Projects in Nigeria said he was impressed with what he saw on ground.
He added that the Committee is aware of the challenges in terms of evacuation and assured that something will be done about it.
The Chairman House Committee on Power disclosed that they have seen almost four power plants across the country, saying the Ogorode Plant has about 500 megawatt capacity.
Hon Aliyu who stressed that the country power is below 3,000Megawatt capacity said part of the visit is to find out whether it is the TCN or the Discos that had refused to take power.
He lamented why the Ogorode Plant was shut down and called on the system operator at the Oshogbo National Grid to explain to the committee.
Hon Aliyu urged Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN to revamp their obsolete infrastructure and also called on the various Discos to invest in their infrastructure, assuring Nigerians that things would be done differently.
He however assured Nigerians that power supply would soon be improved Nationwide.
On the issue of Pre-paid meters not distributed by the Discos especially the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC. The Chairman House Committee on Power said President Muhammadu Buhari has already directed about three million Pre-paid Meters be provided for electricity consumers in Nigeria. Hon Aliyu added that he would ensure that BEDC do the needful on the issue of metering.
He also reveals that the National Assembly has declared estimated billing as illegal. .
The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding NDPH, Mr Chiedu Ugbo while welcoming the lawmakers to the plant said the plant has four gas turbines installed at 504 Mega Watt capacity. Mr Ugbo also disclosed that the Plant has about 504MW of power lying idle, pointing out that evaporation was a major challenge in the plant.
Mr Ugbo said the Power Station is functioning very well but unfortunately they are directed by the National Control Centre NCC, Oshogbo to frequently start and stop the Plant, stressing that they only generate when they are asked to generate.
Mr Ugbo said the turbines are made to run non-stop unless when they are out for maintenance or they have unplanned outage or repairs
The member representing Okpe, Sapele and Uvwie Federal Constituency, Hon Efe Afe for his part urged his constituents to be hopeful and trust that the Chairman of the House Committee on Power would ensure that there is improved power supply to the Constituency.
Hon Afe thanked Hon Aliyu for his promise to donate a transformer and three thousand Pre-paid metres to the Orodje of Okpe kingdom Orhue the First, for onward distribution to his subjects before the end of the year.
