FIVE PERSONS KILLED IN CULT-RELATED VIOLENCE IN UGHELLI, DELTA STATE
At least five persons died in what people attribute to cult-related violence in Ughelli, Ughelli North Council Area of Delta State at the weekend.
Two cult groups people say have struck fear in residents of the area, as they target and eliminate members of rival groups.
It is not clear what sparked the recent killings, but those who spoke on condition of anonymity, say trouble started when friends of both cult groups went for a robbery operation at Afisere area some days ago.
They claimed that during the robbery operation, one of the robbers was fatally shot, prompting the belief that one of the friends turned against the other.
Since then, it was gathered both rival cult groups have been searching for one another, apparently in revenge attacks.
Two bodies were discovered Sunday morning along Ekingbo area, as people went for worship; the circumstances of their death unclear.
Similarly, a group of young men stabbed another man to death in one of the streets close to the Ughelli Main Market.
People are afraid to venture out in the evenings in several parts of Ughelli, following gun shots fired indiscriminately in and around the city.
The Police in Ughelli could not be reached to confirm the situation.
However, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the dead while another person was injured.
She said the Police, in conjunction with the vigilante groups in Ughelli, are on top of the situation and asked everyone to be calm and go about their lawful duties.
